Fear

Fear is one of the strongest motivators of most creatures and causes many of their actions; humans are included in this struggle. We fear for the physical safety of ourselves and others, we fear for the loss of possessions, we fear about various degrees of acceptance by other humans. At some point many people fear for their spiritual existence, presently and eternally. The Bible has many instances of "do not be afraid," in different situations. When a person experiences fear, no doubt, they will react in some manner, giving rise to the description "fight or flight." In these moments a person learns what they value most and on what they depend for rescue. For physical challenges, a close friend may console and be helpful. What about spiritual challenges which overrule the physical? For the Christian, a healthy "Fear of God" is not a focus on impending destruction, but abundant respect, realization of present acceptance as Grace overcomes mistakes and thus, an impending eternal union with God. "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" Rom. 8:15 (NIV)
